This listing includes a pair of split bamboo percussion sticks; two lengths 20" and 24" for two pitches, each with a tuning hole.
When the split ends are bounced off the palm or knee, they buzzing. The buzz is due to a crack that goes most of the way down the instrument. That crack is meant to be there. Slide the colored string up or down the length of the crack to create more or less buzz and to change the pitch. A small hole near the bottom is covered and uncovered by the thumb to produce a wah-wah effect.
Natural cracks will develop in the bamboo. This only adds to the awesome buzzing sound. Also known as Buzz Sticks, BungKaKa, or Balingbing these split bamboo sticks were traditionally use in the Philippine Islands. They can be played in ensembles for the Kayabang dance; with separate players each playing one stick. In villages, people walking along carried the devil chaser to scare away animals (or spirits) in their path.

Hold one between the index and middle fingers, so the flat side is between the fingers and the concave curve is toward you. This one should hang down along your inner wrist. The second one is held between the middle and ring fingers with the flat side between the fingers and the convex curve facing the convex curve of the first bone. Let it hang down along your inner palm and swing freely. Now curl your middle finger so that it lays on the edge of the first bone (the one between your index and middle fingers).
The first bone should be held so it will not move. Curl your ring finger so it lays on the edge of the second bone. This should be held, but allowed to move. The second bone will move and slap into the first. Now hold your hand so your thumb is pointing at your chest. Then, twist your wrist away from you, once; as if cranking. This is the basic slap. The bones will clap against each other in a variety of rhythms. Lots of fun.

The unmistakable "ribb-itt" sound comes from scraping the stick over the ridges on froggy's back. You can also tap the stick on his head for a wood block sound. The larger the frog, the lower the tone, so why not adopt the whole family?
Hold him in the palm of your hand, so he faces the same direction you do. To make him chirp, rub the wooden plectrum over the ridges on his back. It's important that you rub from tail to head. If you want to make him "ribb-itt", rub the plectrum from tail to head and then back down a couple ridges; all in one fluid motion. Now you can change the tone of the "ribb-itt" by covering and uncovering the holes at each side of his smile. Hold him nice, don't let him hop away!

6.5" by 4.5" sheesham thumb piano with 8 steel keys.
Originating in Africa, the thumb piano is also known as the "mbira" or "likembe" and in the 1920's Dr. Hugh Tracey gave them the name most westerners recognize, the "kalimba."
The thumb piano's metal keys are mounted on a wooden platform that acts as the resonating chamber. The longer keys have lower pitches and the shorter keys have higher pitches.
To play, rest the thumb piano on the fingers of both hands and hold it between your palms. Then pluck the keys with your thumbs in a downward motion.
Many different tunings are acceptable, according to personal preference. Specific tuning of a thumb piano is only an issue when two instruments are played together; then they should generally agree in tuning. Otherwise, the tuning is subjective and should only be pleasing to the player.
